The possibilities for utilisation of waste generated in the Turku region are improving. Lassila & Tikanoja (L&T) and Finnsementti are currently working to significantly increase the use of recovered fuels produced from waste materials at Finnsementti’s production units in Parainen and Lappeenranta. A preliminary assessment of the needs for recovered fuels at the units indicates a total need of some 120 000 tons in 2012.
- Increased use of recovered fuels would significantly effectivate utilisation of waste materials in the Turku region. At the same time, waste generated in the Turku region could significantly help reduce CO2 emissions, as recovered fuels would be replacing coal in energy production, says Antti Siipola, Business Unit Manager at L&T
Recovered fuels are produced from wood-based materials and plastics unfit to be recycled as material. Recovered fuels are renewable up to an extent of 60 to 80 percent.
- Finnsementti wishes to promote the use of renewable fuels, as reduced emissions are becoming increasingly important in industrial operations, says Ursula Kääntee, Finnsementti Oy.
So far, recovered fuels have been mainly produced by processing energy waste from the retail and industrial sectors, but in the future we will be able to utilise waste generated by private households as well.
