Starting this autumn, accumulators used in vehicles and industrial applications must be utilised more efficiently in Finland. The company Akkukierrätys Pb in charge of organisation in this respect and L&T have agreed to cooperate to carry out the collection and recycling process. Some 15,000 tons of lead accumulators are being discarded every year in Finland.

”Promoting the utilisation of spent accumulators is an action supporting sustainable development. Accumulators contain valuable raw materials which can be utilised to almost 100 percent. This will help reducing consumption of new raw materials”, says Markku Pullinen, Product Line Director at L&T.

Plastic parts as well as acid and lead will be recovered from the lead accumulators collected by L&T. After processing, these components may be returned to the industry in the form of raw materials.

By next autumn, accumulator importers to Finland will be obliged to put a collection system in place. All batteries and accumulators used in Finland must be collected and delivered into the recycling system for processing and utilisation. As a result of the producer responsibility system, collection points for accumulators are free of charge for consumers.
