Janitors responsible for property maintenance are key persons in terms of securing energy efficiency in building properties. According to energy efficiency assessments made at property locations transferring into Lassila & Tikanoja’s (L&T) care, energy consumption levels may often be significantly reduced by proper property maintenance.

”Looking at energy efficiency in building properties, it is not only about how a building has been constructed. Even recently completed buildings may waste energy if there are shortcomings with regard to maintenance. Significant energy savings may be reached by paying increased attention to energy efficiency in day-to-day property care. In the case of driving, energy efficiency is not only dependant on the vehicle’s model year, but economic driving is important. In the case of buildings, janitors play an important role to secure that properties are being used economically”, says Lassila & Tikanoja’s (L&T) Business Director Timo Kankaanranta.

In properties used by L&T’s property maintenance customers alone, costs for electricity, heating and water consumption amount to more than half a milliard Euro per year. L&T aims at cutting energy consumption at its property locations on an annual basis.

In order to cut energy consumption in building properties, janitors will be playing an important role to identify energy savings potential as part of their daily work. L&T is currently training its janitors to become competent energy savers. Observations made at test locations have shown that matters such as proper property lighting, optimised use of technical equipment, indoor temperature regulation and guidance offered to property users may significantly reduce energy consumption.
