The Russian city of Noginsk has selected L&T to handle its waste management. L&T and Noginsk located within the Moscow area have entered into an agreement to cover the city’s waste management starting from March next year. To start with, operations will concentrate on waste collection and transport.
- Russian cities are now eager to renovate their waste management. This requires significant investments, experience and expertise. L&T is able to address all these needs and requirements. In our opinion, it is important to start building up environmental management in accordance with the principles of sustainable development right from the start, says Pekko Kohonen, Development Director at L&T.
Noginsk, a city of 120 000 residents, decided to modernise its waste management in order to improve city image and enhance environmental responsibility. At the same time, local companies are getting a chance to proceed with their environmental management tasks in a responsible manner.
- Investments and introduction of new technologies is a significant factor to help us reach our targets. We also need extensive and close communication with the local residents, says Pekko Kohonen.
L&T has been involved in environmental management in Russia in two cities and one smaller community, all of which are located in the Moscow vicinity. The environmental management of Dubna with 70,000 residents has been managed by L&T since 2005. 120,000 resident Sergiev Posad started up in 2007. This year, our services also extended to include the 15,000 headcount community of Zaprudnja in the Taldom district.
- It is our target to extend operations in Russia on a gradual basis. We are currently negotiating other environmental management related projects in the region, says Pekko Kohonen.
