The Tallinn City Planning Department has appointed the Environmental Products division of Lassila & Tikanoja plc to take charge of the implementation of a planning project set up to renovate public fittings in Tallinn. The planning work is based on Tallinn’s desire to create a unified city image. The purpose is to facilitate moving around in the city and to improve tidiness and safety. The project also derives from Tallinn’s target for European Capital of Culture nomination in 2011.

The assignment involves implementation of draft ideas presented by the Tallinn City Planning Department, based on which L&T will draw up technical plans for each product group and produce eight product prototypes in the first phase of the project. This part of the project will be completed at the beginning of January.

The project includes all fittings visible around the city, such as benches, waste bins, information boards, outdoor ad structures, public transport bus and tram stop shelters, street kiosks, public toilets, street illlumination as well as modular systems for signposts, plant basins and street and address signs.

Similarity of design is a connecting factor. The concept is based on Estonian domestic furniture design in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The target is to create a feeling of familiarity and safety and to help Tallinners as well as visitors feel at home when moving about in the city.

– Tallinn’s City Planning Department’s decision to appoint L&T to implement the project is based on L&T’s reliability as a cooperation partner; we are not just another supplier of public fittings. Our product planning will always reflect user and maintenance viewpoints as well. This is one of L&T’s strong areas of expertise. Flexibility, too, is important. We are able to tailor our products to meet customer requirements in every smallest detail, says L&T’s Seppo Hartikainen, Vice President, Environmental Products.

– Projects of this extent and ambition are rare. We are pleased to accept this challenge.
