In cooperation with L&T, Elker has started up nation-wide collection and receiving services for fluorescent lamps aimed at the business community. Apart from using the general consumer WEEE reception sites, businesses can deliver their used fluorescent lamps free of charge to L&T’s reception centres. Elker is recommending businesses to use L&T’s reception centres, where the maximum number of lamps to be returned is not limited to 300, as is the case with consumer WEEE reception sites.

”Fluorescent lamps are hazardous waste and further processing requires professional skills. Free of charge fluorescent lamp waste has to be properly packaged and sorted”, says Veikko Hintsanen, Elker’s Executive Director. Corporate waste electrical and electronic equipment is generally not included in the free of charge collection services arranged by the producer communities. Presently, however, fluorescent lamps and luminaries are an exception.

”L&T’s reception centre network of ten collection terminals has national coverage. The centres are located in Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kotka, Oulu, Pori, Tammisaari, Tampere, Turku, Tuusula and Vaasa”, says Markku Pullinen, Product Line Director, L&T Hazardous Waste Services. ”We can also offer collection, packaging, sorting and container services to the business community.”

The Elker group was established by the waste electrical and electronic equipment producer communities – the FLIP Association, the SELT Association and the ITC Producer Cooperative. Based on mutual agreements, Elker is taking care of the producer responsibility obligations of these. 80 per cent of the producers who have entered the WEEE producer register are Elker group members. The collection of fluorescent lamps from the business community is part of L&T’s and Elker’s cooperation, comprising reception centres for waste electrical and electronic equipment, transportation, processing and re-use.
